PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
WHO ARE YOU?
McClelland's Three Needs Theory

MOTIVATION
an activated state within a person that leads to goal-directed behavior

Different people have different personalities and are more or less suited to different roles.  Each of us has strengths and weaknesses in different situations.   Do you find great satisfaction in working as part of a team, or do you generally find team work to be a frustrating experience when you want to get a job done?  Do you enjoy getting projects started and the satisfaction of knowing that you were able to push everyone to do their part, or do you try to avoid situations in which you might get stuck with being responsible to drag everyone else along?

According to McClelland's Three Needs Theory, we are each motivated by a set of basic needs.  For each of us, we are more strongly motivated by some needs and less strongly by others.  This mix of needs gives us each a unique personality, causing some of us to do better if given positions of leadership, some of us to do better if in positions that require collaborative efforts, and some of us to do better if in positions that have no supervision or direction.  On the other hand, people who are especially good leaders can make the most miserable of team players, and good team players can fail spectacularly when asked to work alone without supervision or direction.

Using the table below, how might you classify yourself?  How would your team members classify you?  What is the mix of your team - on what sorts of tasks might each team member do best?  Note that there are no "good" or "bad" personalities in using this framework.
